POS, payments & reservations

Point-of-sale systems, payment processing, and reservation platforms — with attention to what happens when the system goes down mid-service.

The software matters less than the support and the effective rate. A local reseller who can be on site during dinner service is worth more than a marginally cheaper monthly fee, and "free hardware" is almost always paid for through processing.

What to ask before you sign

Take this into the call. No vendor gets to edit this list.

  1. If the hardware is free or heavily discounted, how is that being recovered? It is almost always in the processing rate — ask for the all-in effective rate on a real month of your sales before you compare anything.
  2. For a reservation platform: what does it cost per cover or per month, who owns the guest data, and can I export it if I leave?
  3. Is support local and on-site, or phone-and-ship-a-box? What is the response time during service hours?
  4. Am I locked into your payment processing, and what is the effective rate — all fees, all card types, as a percentage of a real month of my sales?
  5. Is the hardware purchased, financed, or leased? Equipment leases for POS are notoriously hard to exit.
  6. What is the contract term, early-termination fee, and what happens to my data if I leave?
  7. What does offline mode actually do when the internet drops — can I still take cards?
  8. Are there per-integration fees for online ordering, delivery marketplaces, payroll, or accounting?

  • Paloma POS

Restaurant point-of-sale marketed with free hardware and same-day payouts, with a Cleveland-targeted page.

Services: Point of sale · Payment processing

    Serves: Cuyahoga County

Free hardware and same-day payouts are funded somewhere — almost always in the processing rate. Ask for the all-in effective rate on a real month of your sales and compare that number, not the hardware price. Their site does not describe local on-site support or a Cleveland office; confirm what support actually looks like at 7pm on a Friday before signing.

  • Resy

Reservation and waitlist platform for restaurants, covering booking, table management, and guest profiles. A reservation system rather than a point-of-sale.

Services: Reservations · Waitlist and table management · Guest profiles

Serves: Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Summit counties

Complements a POS rather than replacing one. Ask what it costs monthly or per cover, whether guest data is exportable if you leave, and whether it integrates with the POS you already run.

  • Toast

Restaurant-specific point-of-sale and management platform covering ordering, payments, online ordering, and reporting, sold direct rather than through local resellers.

Services: Point of sale · Payment processing · Online ordering · Reporting

Serves: Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Summit, Portage, Geauga counties

Widely used and purpose-built for restaurants, but support is remote rather than a local technician during service. Ask about contract term, early termination, whether hardware is purchased or financed, and the all-in effective processing rate on a real month of your sales.
